Between 2011 and 2019, more than 120 coal-fired power plants were repurposed to burn other types of fuels, usually natural gas, according to the Energy Information Administration. These conversions are driven by economic and environmental pressures, but the projects in themselves are problematic. Do you retire the legacy coal-fired units and simply build a new gas facility in its place, or convert the boiler system? Planners must decide conversion based on issues such as footprint, supply chain and location, location, location. Contractors and utility planners will offer their experiences.
